REVIEW: ROMANCING MISTER BRIDGERTON – JULIA QUINN

Romancing Mister Bridgerton – Julia Quinn

Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend’s brother for . . . well, it feels like forever. After half a lifetime of watching Colin Bridgerton from afar, she thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret . . . and fears she doesn’t know him at all.

Colin Bridgerton is tired of being thought of as nothing but an empty-headed charmer, tired of the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, who can’t seem to publish an edition without mentioning him. But when Colin returns to London from a trip abroad, he discovers nothing in his life is quite the same—especially Penelope Featherington! The girl who was always simply there is suddenly the girl haunting his dreams. When he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide . . . is she his biggest threat— or his promise of a happy ending?

Halfway through the Bridgerton series! It was fun to get to know Colin and Penelope after hearing so much about them in the previous books. I really enjoyed Penelope’s character development from timid wallflower to strong woman who knows what she wants. Also after about a decade, the ton has decided they must reveal the true identity of Lady Whistledown which leads to all sorts of DRAMA! I am really enjoying these “quick” 350+ page reads. They go so fast and are so easy to read which is a nice break from reality. I might take a short break from this series, but do not fear… I will return soon!

Would I recommend this book: Yes – especially if you’re dying to find out Lady Whistledown’s identity

The Duke and I – Julia Quinn – 5/5 stars

An Offer From a Gentleman – Julia Quinn – 4/5 stars

While I am 100% addicted to the Bridgerton series, my favorite book this month was Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. Least Favorite was Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton. This month is a record month for me in number of books finished. I do not expect to keep at this pace for the rest of the year, but then again we shall see! Overall my goal was 50 for the year since I struggled to hit 50 last year. Currently I am very confident in my ability to complete my goal. But the real question is… how many Kings and Crichtons will I be able to cross off my lists? So far only 1, but I did pick up 3 more Kings at Half Price Books the other day! Maybe February will bring my first King of the year!

REVIEW: AN OFFER FROM A GENTLEMAN – JULIA QUINN

An Offer from a Gentleman – Julia Quinn

Sophie Beckett never dreamed she’d be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton’s famed masquerade ball—or that “Prince Charming” would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight.

Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other—except, perhaps, this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid’s garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers her his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy tale love?

And another Bridgerton bites the dust. This time in under 36 hours. Send help. Its amazing I’ve accomplished anything this past week… like keep my kid fed… This one had total Cinderella vibes and I am not upset about it at all. It was a completely different story than Daphne and Anthony’s and has me excited to see how the other siblings love matches play out. Violet Bridgerton is mom goals. We got to see a little more of her in An Offer from a Gentleman and I loved it. While Daphne and Simon’s story still burns deep, Benedict may be my favorite of the Bridgerton kids. We shall see where my opinion stands when I finish the last 5 books.

Would I recommend this book: Yes – if you have jumped on the Bridgerton bandwagon and have started the series

REVIEW: THE VISCOUNT WHO LOVED ME – JULIA QUINN

The Viscount Who Loved Me – Julia Quinn

1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, This Author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London’s most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry. And in all truth, why should he? When it comes to playing the consummate rake, nobody does it better…                          –Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers,April 1814
But this time the gossip columnists have it wrong. Anthony Bridgerton hasn’t just decided to marry–he’s even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended’s older sister, Kate Sheffield–the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate’s the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams…
Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do notmake the best husbands–and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. Kate’s determined to protect her sister–but she fears her own heart is vulnerable. And when Anthony’s lips touch hers, she’s suddenly afraid she might not be able to resist the reprehensible rake herself…

Book two of the Bridgertons done! This one I flew through in under 48 hours. I am so addicted it’s not even funny. Anthony’s story did not quite stand up to Daphne’s, at least for me. Now, don’t get me wrong I still loved this one. The banter between Anthony and Kate is so entertaining. Newton, the corgi, is great as well. Without getting too spoiler-y, I was slightly disappointed in the similarities Anthony and Kate’s story had to Daphne and Simon’s. But also looking back it was unique in its own ways and not an exact “copy/paste” of the first book. In the end another quick, enjoyable read that had me smiling and laughing at times. I have a feeling I am going to fly through this entire series in no time.

Would I recommend this book: Yes, if you enjoyed The Duke & I

REVIEW: THE DUKE & I – JULIA QUINN

The Duke & I – Julia Quinn

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable.

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.

The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: Love ignores every rule…

I don’t consider myself a romance novel person. But I am 100% on this Bridgerton train with no regrets. By now I think most people have at least heard of Bridgerton thanks to Netflix. That is how I ended up here. I binged the show in 2 days and immediately bought the book after. The book and show are very different in my opinion, but for now I am ok with it. Not sure I will feel the same as I continue the series. I really enjoyed this one. It was a quick 400 page read. And while it had its fair share of sappy scenes, it had just as much, if not more, witty banter that kept me thoroughly entertained. Each book in the series focuses on a different Bridgerton sibling. This one focused on Daphne, and I am excited to continue the series and dive into the other siblings stories. Next is Anthony (the oldest) and rumor is, his story is a fan favorite. I love how each chapter opens with an excerpt from Lady Whistledown’s gossip column. While the show has hinted at who Lady Whistledown is, the book has not and I’m curious if/when she will be revealed in the series. On to book two!

REVIEW: BEFORE WE WERE YOURS – LISA WINGATE

Before We Were Yours – Lisa WINGATE

Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty.

Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption.

Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong.

Wow.

So there are a couple things I am guilty of… judging a book by its cover and never reading the synopsis.

This book was recommended to me and (let’s all act surprised here) I went in 100% blind. I had no idea what this book was about and was honestly thinking it wouldn’t be my cup of tea because the book cover looked boring. I was so wrong. I was hooked from the beginning, and while the events were sometimes hard to swallow, this book was SO GOOD. I loved the use of multiple timelines to slowly piece the story together. I loved Rill to pieces. I loved this book. I am so glad it was recommended, and that I listened because it never would have been on my radar to read.

Would I recommend this book: Yes!

“But the love of sisters needs no words. It does not depend on memories, or mementos, or proof. It runs as deep as a heartbeat. It is as ever present as a pulse”

“A woman’s past need not predict her future. She can dance to new music if she chooses. Her own music. To hear the tune, she must only stop talking. To herself, I mean. We’re always trying to persuade ourselves of things.”

REVIEW: PIRATE LATITUDES – MICHAEL CRICHTON

Pirate Latitudes – Michael Crichton

The Caribbean, 1665. A remote colony of the English Crown, the island of Jamaica holds out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Port Royal, its capital, is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. In this steamy climate there’s a living to be made, a living that can end swiftly by disease—or by dagger. For Captain Charles Hunter, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking, and the law of the land rests with those ruthless enough to make it. Word in port is that a galleon, fresh from New Spain, is awaiting repairs in a nearby harbor….

I wanted to love this one so bad… I mean pirates AND Crichton?! Yes please! And I do believe that if this one was released while he was still alive it would have been a lot better. I didn’t have any real major issues with the book. Just felt very meh by the end. It felt unfinished and a little sporadic. I was easily distracted throughout, but then reeled back in with the action scenes. If I am going to recommend a Crichton book, this one probably won’t come to mind, but it wasn’t a complete waste of time of a read either. If you’re into pirates you may still enjoy it like I did. In the end I liked it, was just disappointed because I wanted to love it.

Would I recommend this book: Meh, probably not. But if you are into pirates it may not be a complete waste of time

REVIEW: WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING – DELIA OWENS

Where the Crawdads Sing – Delia Owens

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens

I finally gave in to all the hype and decided to give this book a try. Part 1 was slow… so slow that if I hadn’t been listening to it I probably would have put it down and had little desire to pick it up again. Thankfully a friend told me she felt the same way about Part 1 and that it got so much better with Part 2. She was not wrong! In Part 2 I finally fell in love with Kya and was so entranced with her story I didn’t want it to end. I understand now why so many people love this book. I am sad it took me so long to give it a try. A completely different approach to a murder mystery than I’ve experienced and it was fantastic!

Would I recommend this book: Yes!

“I wasn’t aware that words could hold so much. I didn’t know a sentence could be so full.”

REVIEW: THE TURN OF THE KEY – RUTH WARE

The Turn of the Key – Ruth Ware

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss—a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten—by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family.

What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare—one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the events that led to her incarceration. It wasn’t just the constant surveillance from the home’s cameras, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn’t just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn’t even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman.

It was everything.

First book of 2021 is done! I don’t have high hopes for surviving a whole lot of horror books this year after reading this one. It had me truly freaked for a bit, but that’s also half the fun. About halfway through this book started to feel a little predictable, but Ware still managed to sneak a few things in there that I was not expecting. Always a bonus when I cant completely figure out the ending. I throughly enjoyed The Woman in Cabin 10 but was disappointed by The Lying Game, so I went into this one with lower expectations. It had me hooked from the start and only took me about 2 days to listen to!

Would I recommend this book: Yes

“People do go mad, you know, if you stop them from sleeping for long enough…”

REVIEW: THE BEAST WITHIN: A TALE OF BEAUTY’S PRINCE – SERENA VALENTINO

The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty’s Prince – Serena Valentino

This tale is as old as time: a cruel prince is transformed into a beast. A lovely maiden comes into this monster’s life. He is transformed by her compassion, and the love he feels for her in return. The two live happily ever after.
But any tale, especially one as storied as Beauty and the Beast’s, has been told many different times, and in many different ways. No matter which version one hears, the nagging question remains: what was it that transformed the prince into the beast we are introduced to?
This is one version, pulled from the many passed down through the ages. It’s a story of vanity and arrogance, of love and hatred, of beastliness and, of course, of beauty.

Another quick fun read! I am always a sucker for Disney retellings. What is fun for me is the character ties to Fairest of All. Makes these books feel more like a series than just individual retellings. The next two villains on the list I am very much looking forward to – Ursula and Maleficent. This book was a quick 215 pages. This one starts out and Belle is already at the castle. It then jumps back in time and goes through the Beast’s transformation, and how eventually the curse was broken. While these aren’t ‘drop what you are doing and read this now’ books, they are still fun and I am eager to start on the next in the series.

Would I recommend this book: Yes, like Fairest of All, its a fun book if you are looking for a quick read that doesn’t take a lot of brain power
